You ARE Special

You ARE Special Bode's Galaxy

“You are not special. Neither is the earth.” These are central assumptions of modern astronomy that have guided the discipline, since Copernicus concluded 400 years ago the sun, rather than the earth, was the center of our solar system.

Our faith teaches the opposite. You are amazingly special. God created you. You are "wonderfully made" (Psalm 139:14)! You are so special that the Son of God comes into the world and gives His life on a cross for you. God loves you passionately. You are incredible!

I’m not arguing against science. Astronomers assume the earth isn’t special, because the universe operates the same, as best we can tell, in the Milky Way as in galaxies at the edge of the observable universe.

In fact, I think these astronomical assumptions have important faith implications. All too often, I think I am the center of the universe instead of God. Too frequently, I’m more concerned about myself than my neighbor. Time and again, I limit the power of God’s love. These are easy traps for all of us to fall into.

Jesus reveals that every person in this world is amazingly special. He opens our hearts and minds to God’s love for all beings. He calls us into a new relationship with God, our neighbors, and, indeed, ourselves, proclaiming the amazingness of our lives and God’s entire creation.
