Massacres and Annual Meeting

Massacres and Annual Meeting

This Sunday we will have our annual meeting at Grace.  After the massacres in San Bernardino and Paris, such an event might seem trivial even banal.  I think though that in the shadow of these tragedies our meeting takes on even greater importance.

Yesterday, I read that a young woman intentionally went out walking in the deserted Paris streets the day after the horrific attacks there.  When a reporter asked her if she were afraid, she replied, “Yes, but we must accept that we live in a world where such attacks may occur.  We live in a different war in which they attack us unexpectedly to paralyze us, to sow terror, and that’s why I went out.   It is my way to combat fear.   Telling those who want to hurt us that we are here and continuing to live life is my best weapon against fear.”

Her words reminded me of the beginning of John’s Gospel, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. In him was life, and the life was the light of humans. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”  Although the threat of an attack in Clayton is certainly low, it seems that in a war on terror we are all on the front lines.  News stories advise us to run, fight or hide if confronted by a terrorist attack.  Yet, as the brave Parisian woman showed, we have other ways to resist terror.

Routine matters that we normally think little about take on greater significance.   An annual meeting becomes a weapon against fear not only because we carry on business as usual but also because we carry on Christ's work of peace and reconciliation, of being a light to the world.

Grace’s mission statement is “Love God.  Love your neighbor.  Change the world.”  This year at our annual meeting we will talk about finances and elect new vestry members, but we will also talk about how you and I can change the world one person at a time.

I hope to see you there.
