After-school tutoring ministry planning

After-school tutoring ministry planning

A new year has begun!  Hard to believe it's 2015!  Seems like yesterday that we were all in an uproar over Y2K.  What are your resolutions for the new year?  Lose weight? Eat healthier food?  Exercise more?  Get organized?  Make a difference in someone else's life?

I have to confess that all of the above apply to me.  I don't need to lose a lot of weight, but a few pounds would be good.  I definitely need to do better in the diet, exercise and organization areas!  While each of us at the church has different resolutions for the new year, one area that we are focusing on at Grace is making a difference for someone else.

I met Tuesday January 6 with Jim and Timolee, see the blog picture, for our last planning session of Grace's new after-school tutoring ministry that begins Tuesday January 13.  This ministry seeks to reach children who attend West Clayton Elementary School and live in the impoverished Alta neighborhood off of Highway 42 about a half mile from our church.

I'm excited that we will be working with four children, all of Latino descent, and their families.  In talking to their parents, it's clear that they want what every parent wants for their children - a good life.  These parents know that their children's future depends upon having a good education.

Our after-school tutoring program will help the children with their homework and school projects.  If there is time, we will also work to strengthen basic reading and math skills.  The children will come to the church twice a week for tutoring.  Each child will receive a healthy snack.  The session will last from 4 - 5:30 pm and will include a brief prayer and Bible story.

Eight people from our church have volunteered one day a week for the spring semester.  They have made this commitment because this ministry is not just about academics.  It's about relationships.  This ministry proclaims God's love by showing that there are people who are committed to these children and their families.  Our volunteers will go through background checks and safe church training to make sure that these children and our volunteers work together in a safe environment.  Based upon my past experience in missions and other service ministries, the ones who will probably get the most out of this ministry are the volunteers.

I'm excited about Grace's new year's resolution to make a difference in the live of these children and our community.  Of course, as you can imagine, we didn't make this resolution on the spur of the moment.  We've been preparing for months.  Whatever your resolution might be, I pray God will bless you.  If you'd like to make a difference this year, I invite you to Grace, where you can make a difference and where you can feel the difference.
